Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone class used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and traveler’s diarrhea. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial replication. This action halts the growth and spread of infection-causing bacteria in the body.
For uncomplicated UTIs, ciprofloxacin is commonly dosed as 500 mg by mouth twice daily for 7 days. For traveler’s diarrhea, the standard duration is typically 3 days at the same dosage. Treatment duration may vary based on the specific infection, severity, and clinical response.
Ciprofloxacin is known for its broad-spectrum activity and rapid onset.
How to Use:
Take exactly as prescribed
Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water
May take with food, but avoid taking with milk, yogurt, or calcium-fortified products
Warnings:
Separate ciprofloxacin from antacids or supplements containing calcium, iron, or zinc by at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after
Finish the entire course, even if symptoms improve
Do not use to treat viral infections (colds, flu)
Report side effects like tendon pain, nerve symptoms, or severe rash to your provider immediately
