Ciprofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone class used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and traveler’s diarrhea. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial replication. This action halts the growth and spread of infection-causing bacteria in the body.

For uncomplicated UTIs, ciprofloxacin is commonly dosed as 500 mg by mouth twice daily for 7 days. For traveler’s diarrhea, the standard duration is typically 3 days at the same dosage. Treatment duration may vary based on the specific infection, severity, and clinical response.

Ciprofloxacin is known for its broad-spectrum activity and rapid onset.
