Valacyclovir Medication Description

Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat or prevent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including oral herpes (cold sores caused by HSV-1) and genital herpes (HSV-2). It works by slowing the growth and spread of the virus, helping the body’s immune system control the infection.

Valacyclovir can shorten the duration and severity of outbreaks, reduce pain and itching, and help prevent the formation of new sores. Early treatment provides the best results — ideally within 72 hours of a first outbreak or within 24 hours of a recurrence.

Usage Instructions

• Taken by mouth, typically twice daily for up to 5 days depending on the type and severity of the outbreak

• May be prescribed for daily suppressive therapy to help prevent recurrences

• Can be taken with or without food

• Stay well hydrated during treatment to support kidney function

Warnings & Precautions

• For best results, begin treatment as soon as symptoms appear

• Does not cure herpes, but can help manage symptoms and reduce transmission risk

• Inform your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease or a weakened immune system

• Not a substitute for safe sexual practices. Transmission is still possible even without visible sores
