    Imiquimod topical cream is a prescription medication used to treat external genital and perianal warts. It works by stimulating the body’s immune system—both the innate and adaptive branches—to recognize and eliminate abnormal skin cells caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Imiquimod acts as an immune-response modifier rather than an antiviral, helping the body target infected cells for removal.

     

    Patients apply a thin layer of the cream directly to the wart-affected area, gently rubbing it in until it is no longer visible. Treatment continues until the warts are completely cleared or for a maximum of 16 weeks, whichever comes first.

     

    Because imiquimod stimulates a localized immune response, mild skin reactions like redness, irritation, or swelling may occur as the body eliminates the infected cells.
